\nAdmittedly this is a four-hour drive from your Mar Vista apartment, but Joshua Tree National Park is a treasure and quite frankly worth the drive.  Joshua Tree is a great spot for hikers, rock climbers, campers and nature buffs, the surreal landscape is a mix of jumbled rocks, cactus, pinyon pines and of course the stark limbs of the Joshua tree.  Explore by day and star gaze at night.
